For all Oceans does to please the eyes and ears, it does nothing to engage the brain.

Oceans floods us with stunning visuals of the panoply of sea life. But without a compelling story, or a strong point of view, or mere information, we can only 'ooh' and 'aah' so much.

Despite the talents of Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud -- the Oscar-nominated duo behind Winged Migration, who once again contribute their amazing, in-the-midst-of photography -- the most striking thing about Oceans is its banality.

There's a been there/swam that feeling to Oceans.

Needs more information and more stunning images that speak for themselves, not another earnest monologue from Captain Obvious.

...does have some beautiful imagery, but it is randomly put together, fails to identify about half the creatures we see, and features some often nonsensical narration.

With a subject as literally vast as this one, it's essential to either narrow the focus (make the film about one particular species, or region) or carefully construct the approach (group footage by theme). Oceans does neither.

You're torn. Is this a work of nature pornography or consciousness raising? The movie thinks if it overwhelms us with the former, we won't notice the relative absence of the latter.

Could the script have been less informative? Could it have been more soporifically read than Pierce Brosnan's rendition? I don't think so.

A regrettably scattered, slapdash affair that holds none of the narrative flow and only a fraction of the visual majesty found in Disneynature's first effort, 2009's Earth.

It comes to American theaters saddled with narration by Pierce Brosnan, who purrs through the gratingly vague script like the world's plummiest old half-drunken uncle.

A movie so bursting at the seams with images, it ultimately lacks focus.

The wow factor alone makes Oceans a great Earth Day/Earth Week at the movies.

A visually stunning plunge into the life aquatic; shame about the narration.
