  This is sort of a re-review, since I did see this when it first came out, but at the time I had not seen the original Tron. In my first viewing I really liked the visuals, but was overall extremely disappointed. Do I like more or less having now seen the original? Both. Honestly at first in my re-watch I was into it. I understood what was going on a little more, that helped, and the connections to the first movie were a little forced but I understood their need. Once we got to the Grid I had to ask myself "how did I ever hate this movie, this is awesome!" The disc fights, are great, and I will fight anyone who says that lightcycle sequence isn't one of the best sci-fi action scenes of the last decade. Once we get off-grid though I started to remember. Jeff Bridges' character Flynn has stuck in the computer world for 20 years after a coup by his computer alter-ego resulting from him discovering "life" in this world. These are very interesting ideas, but they are presented in the dullest way possible. Beautiful rooms and imagery of people talking with no personality. The first Tron had such a joy and energy to it. This Tron has no joy and no energy. Everyone is so sad and defeated. That's sort of the point of the story, but rather than the goofy fun of the first movie everything is put through this gothic-techno layer that looks cool for action sequences but after a while just becomes a bore for your story. On top of that, the writing is bad. It's not like the first Tron was a masterpiece, but watching these two back-to-back, you realize how much better the writing in that one is. Every bit of writing in Tron Legacy is there to serve a function: this is the scene where they need to get something, this is the scene where they fail, this is the scene where they have a heart-to-heart. You feel the function of the scene and not the emotion of the scene every time, and it just makes these bits a chore to sit through. I haven't even mentioned how this "grid" world feels so much smaller than the whole computer world of the first movie, how they sideline the title character in a manner akin to Hawkeye in the first Avengers, or how they totally drop surviving characters from the first movie who played an important role. Point is it needed a rewrite. This is all really a shame, because I'd like more Tron movies, and clearly they do too. They sequel bait the fate of the title character, and I'd like to see that with a better team behind it. The first Tron is and will always be, a classic. This Tron has some amazing visuals and a couple of cool ideas, but just doesn't execute them in the way the long-awaited sequel should. This isn't even a sequel I was waiting for, but as a new fan, I'm still disappointed. Still, the visuals and music alone are enough to bump it up to a moderate ranking, along with a painfully underused but damn enjoyable Michael Sheen. There's a good movie here buried under a heap of problems. It's not a good movie, but it's got good ideas and one mind-blowing scene. I still can't forgive the missed potential and how pedestrian the second half became though.

  Do you have to completely understand a film to completely enjoy it? It is a question I had to ask myself after watching Tron: Legacy. Despite being released twenty-eight years after the first film, the sequel only offers a brief recap of the original film, and doesn't really provide enough information for those of us who haven't seen the first movie. That being said, what I gathered was that Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) created the most popular video game of it's time, which launched a billion dollar company, but it was more than just a game. There was also a virtual world where life and death battles took place and control of the real world was at stake. Somehow Flynn was trapped by his alter-ego, Clu, and stuck there, until his son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund), receives a message all these years later, and discovers his fathers secret world and also becomes trapped inside. Granted I don't really understand why this world was created in the first place, how "the bad guys" were created, or even who Tron actually is. Never the less, I still enjoyed the action the film has to offer, as well as the incredible special effects. The truth is that for a PG Disney movie, this was an incredibly complicated story, and the real appeal here was the special effects, which were revolutionary ten years ago. As for the cast, I really liked Garrett Hedlund, I thought he had a big future ahead of him, after Four Brothers, but for some reason he doesn't do many films like this and I don't run into him too often. Jeff Bridges on the other hand seemed very disinterested in reprising his role, almost as if he was doing it for a big pay day. Not to mention, the digitized younger alter-ego, Clu, was more than somewhat creepy. Overall, I really didn't get the point of the film, but it was entertaining enough and it killed a few hours, exactly what I was in the mood for at the time I watched it.

  There are things to really like about Tron: Legacy. For starters, I appreciate the continuity of the franchise by bringing back Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner. Both also deserve extra credit for portraying two characters, especially Bridges since he's a main character. The music is very fitting for this universe; Daft Punk might not be the most conventional choice to write a film score, but they didn't disappoint with this one. The most impressive part of this movie was its visual effects. The bike sequences and disk fights were fun to watch. Now, although this movie was fun to look at and listen to, it was a challenge to get through. The middle act is where things started to go downhill because the action slowed down and the "story" picked up. The plot was very dull, and the characters were duller. I honestly didn't care about the fates of any of the characters because they weren't very fleshed out at all, so it was hard to take the climax of the movie very seriously. That being said, this is a harmless movie that you can justify watching with the family, but don't expect anything memorable.

  Marvelous visuals and a stirring score make it easy to forgive the film its deficiencies. Like the original, Legacy transports you to another world. Unlike most films with heavy CG, the Tron setting looks very substantial, with a strong material feel that gives the action sequences a sense of fatality and excitement. Jeff Bridges' natural style helps the viewer to make believe the world and the events are real, especially the various bits of narration called for (and reminiscent of Alec Guiness in Star Wars). Recommended to fans of sci-fi epic and to those who never tire of the Hero's Journey.
