I dropped out after an hour because it doesn't feel like a story here. Guy gets a job in a bar while doing finance stuff, and then the middle part was like what? Nah.

Without question Tom Cruise's finest movie. His nuanced performance reveals subtle truths about New York in the late 1980's while obliquely addressing the complex relationship between alcohol and material success. Gina Gershon has a standout role, foreshadowing her future cinema superstardom.

A criminally underrated Tom Cruise film that isn't as fantastic as his other films, but had a good story, nice music, and a plot that worked fine.

The tone of this thing is all over the place! It plays mostly as a feel-good bartending fantasy with some fun over-the-top nightlife sequences, but then it devolves into heavy melodrama and finally going pitch-black dark by the end, only to come back for a feel-good conclusion. Ultimately there isn't much to this rather empty movie, but if you wanna see Tom Cruise banter and spin bottles, this'll make for a good rainy Saturday afternoon flick.

This movie is just fun and a good laugh too! The banter between Brian (Tom cruise) and Doug is entertaining to watch and well written. Not a film to take too seriously or seriously at all by any means but a great escape and I liked how Brian gets sucked into working at the bar (having a great laugh along the way) while trying to juggle college work of an evening. The scene where Brian is in class and the teacher is ripping into everybody's work and then gets angry at him for falling asleep. He then gives as good as he gets say the teacher hides in the school to escape the real world! For me there are deeper themes in this film like suicide and how Doug just couldn't deal with the mess he had got himself into. He had left a note for Brian with typical Doug humor while at the same time sad made Brian realise that he was too proud to ask for help and he did'nt want to end up like him. This film is worth a watch but if your into Dowton abbey then go watch something else otherwise have a laugh and a cocktail (or beer or two) while you get transported back in time to the 80's!

I watched it on initial release in 1988 and loved it but that was as much a product of the era and my age at the time (teen). Rewatching it in 2020 shows just how thin the "plot" is and just how much the audience is asked to stretch credibility in order to watch this. Bryan Brown is clearly enjoying himself throughout but Tom Cruise seems to be...well...cruising through it amiably with a minimum of real emotion or engagement at times. It often comes across as a very long music video with some dialogue thrown in that is almost comical at times. Yet despite all of this - it has its entertaining moments that keeps you watching and a top notch soundtrack. Not one that will stretch you and at the end you may wonder how you spent the night watching it. It kind of feels like you've been pickpocketed but given back some loose change to soften things.

Cocktail is an ok movie, the plot is weird but Brian (Tom Cruise) is really good throughout this movie. Also, there's some stupid moments throughout this movie, which don't make much sense or link up to anything. The movie's even got a pretty good soundtrack, which include lots of good songs. Finally, Tom Cruise is a really good bartender and he's honestly great at making drinks throughout this movie, I think him studying bartending for his role really paid off. Overall, Cocktail is an ok movie. It's got a very questionable plot, a pretty good soundtrack and Tom Cruise being really good at making drinks as a bartender.

Okay, Tom Cruise working at a TGI Friday's might not seem like the most promising start for a movie but it gets better from there. The scenes of bartending are undeniably raucously fun, and the mentor-mentee relationship that develops between the Red Eye drinking Zen Bartender elder and his young, self-help book reading protege is fertile ground for plot and character development. Throw in heaps of Eighties nostalgia, a side-trip to Jamaica and you have the elements of a hit film from the Reagen Era. The love story is kind of a thrown-together after thought that doesn't make 100 percent sense but that's okay, it's still quite entertaining indeed.
