Movie Info

The Flying Tigers were a group of American volunteer aviators, flying against the Japanese on behalf of General Claire Chennault and Chinese leader Chiang Kai-Shek in the months just prior to World War II. John Wayne is the most responsible of the bunch, and John Carroll the least. It's bad enough that Carroll tries to beat Wayne's time with pretty Red Cross nurse Anna Lee; but when Carroll's negligence results in the death of veteran-flyer Paul Kelly, the man becomes a pariah to the rest of the pilots. Unable to serve in World War II due to health reasons, John Wayne spent the duration licking the Japanese and the Germans in front of a Republic Studios process screen.

This is a solid movie from the 40's. Basic plot is a group of American pilots who volunteer their services to the defense of China against the Japanese. The story main focus is on John Wayne and John Carroll characters. Wayne is the leader of this group of pilots and Carroll plays the hot head cocky character Woody. The story leads the characters to war, death, friendships, love and duty to their country when America gets into the war with Japan. Some typical stereotypes when it comes to the Chinese actors but expected from the time this film was made. Solid acting all around. Wayne and Carroll are excellent in their roles. The movie has some dog fight scenes throughout. Not that great when compared to movies today but they did their job for a film from the 40's. If your a John Wayne or John Carroll fan check this out or just looking for a old film about WWII then check this out.
