Now this one I actually remembered when I watched as a little kid and it was like seeing it for the first time I was remembering everything oh and what memories I loved the bone finger part. The real star is the evil witch, she is so ugly and scary, and really I wouldn't want to be trapped in that house with her even not as adult. And all that sugary food shown it makes you want to have pie and cake for real! I think the movie found the perfect balance between scary (the witch) and sweet (thanks to the songs). This version of the story is taken from the Humperdinck opera, but it's still a recognizable rendition. The cast is fine, Hugh Pollard as Hansel, Nicola Stapleton as Gretel, David Warner and Emily Richard as the parents. But the REAL treat here is Cloris Leachman, as Grizelda or Griselda, the Witch. This veteran actress is simply terrific, whether coaxing the children inside her gingerbread house, or threatening them with death. She also sings well, something she has rarely done in films. The production is tasteful, as are the new songs, adapted from the opera Cloris Leachman is the most evil witch ever filmed. She gave me the creeps when I was a little kid. The songs are great, the scenery is lovely and when you see the witch's house and garden, I think you'll agree that they are excellent. This is an excellent make-up job on Cloris Leachman. A nice adaptation of the original Opera score and considering how low the budget, the gingerbread house set is pretty impressive. It has some memorable goose bump-inducing moments. For once in the history of live-action family films by family film companies, someone decided to hire a great actress to portray an evil character. And she does it will some real verve! Before you see this, be forewarned, that there is a real witch. And she's no pink-dress-with-bubbles-and-magic-wand fairy. She's nasty. There's also great imagination here. You have to love the actual children being encased inside gingerbread people cut-outs. It really makes you wonder how she got them in there. They are so many that they are enough to make a line that decorates the road on both sides to and from the infamous candy house where the witch lives. There's a damn great ending too, inflated to perfect proportion by the effects. This one's a real winner, all round! In this live-action version of the classic fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel are the offspring of an impoverished woodcutter and his wife who wander into the woods in this Grimm Brother's fairy tale. The trail of bread crumbs they leave to find their way back is eaten by birds, and the children are lured into the gingerbread house of the wicked witch. Based on the fairy tale by The Brothers Grimm. Hansel and Gretel are trapped in the deceptively decorated house of the witch Griselda who wishes to fatten Hansel so that he may be baked into a delicious gingerbread treat.
