Heavy going for all its beauty, but still superior to Disney's own live-action adaptation with Jason Scott Lee.

It's a formless, often dull time, but the verdant Technicolor (shot by Lee Garmes) gives it a nice gloss.

The color is strikingly vivid and some of the individual scenes have natural charm. But the film, as a whole, is ostentatious.
