Critic Reviews for The Arena (Naked Warriors)

All Critics (1)

it drags on after a while, and it's a little light in the skin quotient, with only a few scattered scenes here and there. But dammit, it's half-naked slave girls duking it out with swords. That's gotta be worth 83 minutes of your time

Audience Reviews for The Arena (Naked Warriors)

Sub-par exploitation flick, only worth recommending for its women-as-gladiators concept, and Pam Grier. Jack Hill could've made something at least entertaining out of this, but alas.

Mamwai is an African known for her great dancing and she lives in a small tribe in northern Africa. A roman legion swoops in and plucks each girl from their village and sells them into slavery. An owner of the local battle arena purchases both girls to work in the arena kitchen. As the arena becomes less successful in terms of popularity, the owner of the arena has an epiphany to get his slave girls to fight for the crowd. The fights are a hit; however, Bodicia and Mamwai are not too keen on the idea of killing each other. As the prospects of Bodicia and Mamwai fighting each other increases, they devise a plan to escape the arena. The storyline for this picture is better than anticipated. The settings are well depicted and the battle scenes were okay. There were a few gory sequences that were well presented and this film contains comedic content sprinkled throughout the picture. Pam Grier and Margaret Markov were stunning in their roles. “We have to satisfy their animal heat?” The Arena is a film my wife has been trying to obtain for some time. My wife is a huge fan of Pam Grier’s 70’s pictures. Having seen the previews for this film, I initially thought this was going to be a sexploitation film; however, having seen the Big Bird Cage and The Big Doll House, I should have known better. This film has a more interesting storyline than anticipated and it was entertaining on multiple levels. This is a better than average picture that is worth viewing. “God will listen to the cattle in the butcher’s stable?” Grade: C+

This minor sexplotation film is notable for 2 reasons 1) Pam Grier 2) It's Edited by Joe Dante It's rather standard fare, but worth seeing for Grier fans
