Peter Pan

Critics Consensus

Though it doesn't delve deeply into the darkness of J.M. Barrie's tale, Peter Pan is a heartwarming, exuberant film with some great tunes.

In this Disney animated film, Wendy (Kathryn Beaumont) and her two brothers are amazed when a magical boy named Peter Pan (Bobby Driscoll) flies into their bedroom, supposedly in pursuit of his rebellious shadow. He and his fairy friend, Tinkerbell, come from a far-off place called Neverland, where children stay perpetually young. Enchanted, the kids follow him back. But when Pan's nemesis, the pirate Captain Hook (Hans Conried), causes trouble, the kids begin to miss their old life.

  • It is doubtful if the wistful fantasy has ever been done with such charm and beauty as fills the Walt Disney version of James M. Barrie's fanciful play.

  • In the 36 years of its existence, the movie has aged as little as Peter himself. It is still a lush, bright feature that happily clicks along with rollicking songs by Sammy Cahn, Sammy Fain and others.

  • A delightful entertaining film that will appeal to the young and the not-so young alike.

  • Disney's depersonalizing habit of putting different teams in charge of different sections of the story really shows up here.

Though it is supposed to be an adventurous story of youth and innocence, it is marred by the fact that Peter Pan and Tinker Bell come off as truly unlikable characters, and it must be a sign that it isn't really working the way it should when you see yourself rooting for Captain Hook.

Sir James M. Barrie's beloved tale of Peter Pan is turned into a fun and exciting animated feature by Walt Disney. In order to save Wendy from having to grow up, Peter Pan whisks her and her brothers away to the magical world of Never Land to join in his adventures. Once again Disney delivers amazingly vivid and textured animation. And the characters are written especially well, and have great depth to them. Walt Disney's Peter Pan has endured as a beloved family classic, and is fun for all ages.

Another one of Disney's best. Lots of charismatic characters and catchy tunes as usual.

Peter Pan is one of the first Disney films that I saw that appealed to me, but compared to others, didn't really stand out. I for one, thought that Finding Neverland was a better film, as I much preferred the story of how the character of Peter Pan came into being. I'm not saying that I hated this film, I found it very good, entertaining and fun, but compared to other films that Disney has made in the first few years they operated, I find this film to be good, but not as good as previous Disney features. Peter Pan has all the unique ingredients that make up an effective, entertaining, and engaging Disney film. I found this film to be good, but not as good as others in Disney's back catalogue. Nonetheless this is still good entertainment for the entire family, and it should be seen by every Disney fan out there. The film has a great story, despite its limitations. The film manages to be a good take on the classic tale. Peter Pan has great characters brought to life by a good cast of voice talents. This is a childhood favorite even if I don't see it as good as previous Disney films. A terrific film despite its flaws, Peter Pan is nonetheless a great family adventure that will bring on a good viewing experience. Enjoyable and fun, Peter Pan is a must see film, and though not as great as the first few Disney films, it still belongs among the best that Disney has produced. A fun film to watch even with the fact that I didn't enjoy it as much as Pinocchio and Snow White.
