A Juliet who knocks back the potion on a single line of dialogue, as though taking a quick swig of after-hours cocoa, is not to my mind entirely Juliet.

This more-or-less unprecedented naturalism in screen Shakespeare is part and parcel of why the film works so well, and why it was such a huge success in 1968.

Audience Reviews for Romeo and Juliet

Yes I think we all get the picture that the leads played their roles fantastically. The movie itself wasn't perfect because of the cheesiness of it. It's great if your into romance films but it's not for everyone. Olivia Hussey is definetely the best Juliet there's ever been. It's solid for a romance but as I said it wont hold universal appeal. The reason being for me because it didn't feel like it was on a large enough epic or tragic scale.

I liked this version, but I had a feeling they had a lot of vreepy clothes and terrible acting.

Saw this in English class my freshman year of high school. I don't have excellent memories of all of it, so I should probably rewatch it sometime, but, for a straight take on the story, it's probably the best one to pick. No one does spectacle like Zeffirelli.
