Only required if you're crazy for Streisand.

For the most part, A Star Is Born is a dull, indistinguishable remake that reeks with that omni-present Streisand ego.

This new version follows the previous three in its broad outline, but there are differences. To make room for a number of songs, characterization has suffered.

Not even the musical numbers are safe from this general disaster. [Full Review in Spanish]

A Star is Born rarely stops seeming manufactured; it can't disguise its manipulations or the process of the storytelling. You see the tangled strings, not the puppets.
March 6, 2019
The trouble with rock 'n' roll in A Star Is Born is that there isn't any. The soundtrack is filled with homogenized harmonics passing for rock, but not a single song is good enough even to be counterfeit.

Too often director Frank Pierson appears to be allowing his players to act the scene as they think fit rather than under his guidance.

It is ironic that the star system itself has killed A Star is Born, a film written to expose that system for just this kind of destructiveness.
October 3, 2018
This version vaunts its modernity by vulgarising everything in sight.

The movie's basic problem is that we simply cannot believe that Streisand and Kristofferson are in the throes of a passionate love affair.

The dialogue is surpassingly mawkish, and Barbra Streisand's performance is a non-stop aria of self-regarding cuteness. In short, A Star Is Born is a real stinkeroo which wastes a potentially good idea.

A dreary and bloated production that can't sustain its 140-minute running time (the 1954 version is even longer at 176 minutes, but it feels like a live-action short when compared to this one).

While in its romantic and romanticized particulars, this A Star Is Born can often seem silly, hoary, disjointed or meandering, the essence of the showbiz narrative still exerts a powerful pull... [Blu-ray]

The slow-burn melodramatic love story takes a while to get where it's going, but Streisand's star power is in full effect and Kristofferson is deliciously bitter enough to keep things watchable.
March 26, 2009
The world of pop-rock has waste and self-destructiveness built into its system: Kristofferson acknowledges this and the insight makes him incredibly moving. Streisand makes no nod in its direction.

Ms. Streisand has a great voice and a great stage presence, and she has made a number of good films in her career. For me, A Star Is Born is not one of them.

Barbara Streisand. Is. A Star Is Born. And two-shots have never been so completely arbitrary.
November 20, 2006
An ego project for Streisand and then companion Jon Peters, or a director (Frank Pearson), who can't handle his leading lady. Either way: This remake, marred by a fake, overly sentimental ending, is only worth seeing for Streisand's singing.

Its self-conscious lack of taste is expressed in more than just bad shirts and polyester dialogue - there's the peculiar, quasi-autobiographical elements in its stars' performances.

Hopelessly stuck in the bell-bottomed clichés of the '70s... hasn't aged well and isn't much fun to watch
