Movie Info

Misanthropic punk rockers take over an LA suburb slated for demolition and try to form a family of sorts in this interesting drama. Unfortunately, the remaining neighbors do not want fringe people living near them and organize a redneck gang of vigilantes to chase the punks away, but the punks are more clever than they look and soon begin retaliating in interesting ways.

  • It still shows enormous empathy and sensitivity in capturing the angst and alienation of American youth, making it seem both rooted in a specific time and place and strangely timeless.

  • A justifiably angry film, fast and full of violent action, though there's plenty of humour too; and the lack of originality is amply compensated for by its manifest sincerity.

  • Penelope Spheeris's Suburbia is a clear- eyed, compassionate melodrama about a bunch of young dropouts who call themselves ''The Rejected'' or, for short, the TR's.

  • Spheeris' empathy and lack of judgment allow her to conform to the pace of the world she's entered, as opposed to trying to corral it into her own.

  • Suburbia is for the most part wretchedly acted and broadly scripted, but it has a raw vibe that can't be denied.

  • Although hardly believable, the story is effective, making its rather unwholesome characters sympathetic.

A beautiful, mostly realistic, very gritty and dark, drama of outcast teenage life in Southern California in the 80s. It all feels very real, but it's not a boring drama at all. The characters and simple story are presented perfectly. The movie makes you cry sometimes, laugh other times, feel for the characters, identify with them, and there are some real fun scenes too. The music is wonderful too, the club scenes were some of my favorites in the movie. Spheeris doesn't hold back much from the realism, although you can imagine things being much worse for the characters at times. This movie has both grit and heart. I suppose it's like a gritty dirty heart that you just want to love and cherish. Great cult film, watch it.

Awesome, awesome movie. I love the part where they throw the glass bottle at the bus and say, "I hate buses." I don't know why, but I love it.

Again with the punk runaways. It's good...I remembered to leave my garage door locked after seeing this movie.
