Movie Info

Donald Sutherland plays a brilliant surgeon who becomes a media celebrity after performing an artificial-heart transplant. Jeff Goldblum, inventor of the ersatz heart, likewise basks in the glow of sudden fame. The only person to have reservations about the procedure is heart recipient Mare Winningham, who becomes depressed over the knowledge that she's not altogether human. Several ethical questions are raised and left unresolved; the film assumes that the audience is intelligent and perceptive enough to draw its own conclusions. Released in Canada in 1981, Threshold was not offered an American distribution until after the Barney Clark heart transplant of 1983. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Audience Reviews for Threshold

The first artificial heart is made and used. It's time to see a real movie for a change. Hospital drama shows heart transplants up close. It's the first film I ever saw that shows surgery up close and personal. No fake stuff in this one, its like you are there! Respected cardiac surgeon Dr. Thomas Vrain performs a risky operation to provide a patient with the first artificial heart ever implanted in a human subject. [img][/img] He and his colleague, research scientist Dr. Aldo Gehring, consider the risks and weigh the odds as time runs out for Carol Severance, the patient. Severence will die unless the experimental surgery is done quickly and succeeds. [img][/img] Canadian Best Actor award went to a young Donald Sutherland as the world esteemed heart surgeon who welcomes estranged biologist Jeff Goldblum into his world. The pair develope the first artificial heart and this film shows how it was done. [img][/img] Donald Sutherland Threshold is a 1981 drama/science fiction film from Canada, directed by Richard Pearce. Sutherland also won best actor at the 1982 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for his performance.
