Movie Info

Alternating effortlessly between comedy and suspense and back again, Too Hot to Handle stars Myrna Loy as a famous aviatrix and Clark Gable as an opportunistic newsreel photographer. Gable and rival shutterbug Walter Pidgeon agree to accompany Loy on her search for her missing brother, sensing a good story and excellent photo op. Their odyssey takes them into the deepest jungles of the Amazon, where Gable's photographic prowess saves everyone's lives when hostile natives attack. Along the way, both Gable and Pidgeon fall in love with Loy. The classic opening sequence in Too Hot to Handle, in which the resourceful Gable fakes a bombing raid for the benefit of his cameras, was allegedly conceived by Buster Keaton, then a free-lance MGM gag man.

This preposterously-plotted adventure reteam Gable and Myrna Loy, but it is not as good or entertaining as their previous feature, Test Pilot.

Audience Reviews for Too Hot to Handle

Too Hot to Handle (1938) Back in the days before television, people got their news from the newspaper or from newsreels that were shown inside the movie theaters. Studios were very competitive with each other over the scoops and images that they could get. Chris Hunter (Clark Gable) wasn't above staging a shot, if the actual news wasn't exciting enough. Chris and his rival, Bill Dennis (Walter Pidgeon) are covering the Japanese invasion of China when he meets an aviatrix, Alma Harding (Myrna Loy). Chris tries to make Alma the exciting story. Naturally, this all blows up in his face. Part of it is getting a swell story, but the other part of it was that Chris was falling for Alma. He follows her in a search for her missing brother in the Amazon jungles. Chris's partner and soundman is José Estanza (Leo Carrillo) who played Pancho in the TV series, The Cisco Kid. I know, it's standard romantic comedy fare, but not a total waste of your time.

An amusing old school comedy. Myrna Loy's not much of an actress, but it's hard not to wish you were as good with the ladies as the King of Hollywood himself.

Loy and Gable are excellent together. They really don't get the attention they deserve as one of the screen's great teams, but they made a few films together and had very nice chemistry. This movie drags a lot after they meet the natives, though, and becomes kind of silly.
