Dick Tracy is stylish, unique, and an undeniable technical triumph, but it ultimately struggles to rise above its two-dimensional artificiality. Read critic reviews

A visual delight and a dramatic letdown.

Forget the plot. The essence of Dick Tracy lies in characters and style, and there it exceeds last summer's clunky, over-produced Batman.

The film moves at a chug when it should put the pedal to the floor.

Beatty and his team of collaborators have heightened the vibrantly tawdry urban night world of Chester Gould's classic comic strip.

Though it looks ravishing, Warren Beatty's longtime pet project is a curiously remote, uninvolving film.

Forget the hype. Now for the real question: How's the damn movie? Answer: Pretty darn swell.

Mar 13, 2019One hell of a film, Beatty (star and director) throwing everything at you and the kitchen sink. The cast alone is an accomplishment, but costuming, design, make-up, music, cinematography, this thing is an unqualified work of art. That fails to connect. A work without heart. It ought to be taught as a class. An agonising disappointment.Kevin M. W Super Reviewer

Apr 15, 2014Warren Beatty's effective and original envisioning of a classic comic book story is today a very underrated film with a rich colorful palette of action-oriented thrills, some proper noir tribute stunts, and a very complex and visually impressive design, featuring Beatty himself as the scrupulous detective that finds himself in the middle of both professional and emotional conflicts. The universe the film creates precedes future projects like Sin City and countless others like a true boss, and throughout, the movie combines an unstoppable quick pace with a good score and a hilariously awesome villainous Al Pacino in a role that is just too campy to be true. The story is not something out of the ordinary, but boy, does this deliver the goods with some unique style! I also find the hate against Madonna as funny as Pacino's inflated evil face quoting presidents and philosophers while screaming at his zombie-like mob thugs. 76/100Edgar C Super Reviewer

Apr 15, 2013"Calling Dick Tracy." Warren Beatty brings legendary detective Dick Tracy to the big screen in this campy and fun comic book film. The story follows famed police detective Dick Tracy as he attempts to rid the city of organized crime; meanwhile notorious gangster Big Boy Caprice eliminates his competition and becomes the head of all the crime families. Starring Warren Beatty, Madonna, and Al Pacino the film has an excellent cast; but it's Pacino's over-the-top, charismatic performance that steals the show. The visual style of the film is also quite remarkable, and has an impressive surrealness to it. And, Danny Elfman provides a wonderful score that's whimsical and upbeat. A clever and entertaining satire of the gangster genre, Dick Tracy is packed with action and adventure.Dann M Super Reviewer

Dec 01, 2012Coming a year after 'Batman' this film borrows heavily from that film, using similar set scheme for the city (but not as gothic) and borrowing Danny Elfman for the score. Like that film the hero is a little bland and boring and the film benefits from over-the-top villains, especially Pacino chewing up the scenery. The colour scheme works well to remind you of the original comics and although the storyline is very familiar it's a lot of fun trying to recognise all the great actors disguised by their heavy make-up. Sondheim contributed the songs and they work well but Madonna isn't a good enough songer to really deliver them and she is probably the weakest thing about the film.David S Super Reviewer
