I really liked this movie. Deceitful Joan Fontaine. Cynical, jaded Robert Ryan. People reader Mel Ferrero.

Good cast is wasted in a typical "grasping woman" story.

Joan Fontaine is able to shine as the femme-fatale tearing up high society in the Bay Area. She is not a likeable character, but has plenty of drive.

Joan is in her viper mode here and the film is enjoyable but the ending is a letdown.

Fontaine gives a lesson in social-climbing--A Budding Vamp!!

Low-rent All About Eve, but it's not really fair to compare it to one of the greatest films ever made - especially since it came out in the same year. Closer also came to mind. Fontaine is quite good, as is Robert Ryan, but the real star of the show is Mel Ferrer - he steals every scene. Which is surprising, since I've never known him to have scene-stealing capabilities. Quite a solid film.

This is a good, sexy movie because of Joan Fontaine and her two beaus, leading actors: Zachary Scott and Robert Ryan. Robert Ryan matches Joan Fontaine with zest and sexy talk. It's fun to watch! This movie delivers! Women (myself included) will love this movie as a late Saturday night movie.

Nicholas Ray directed this mostly compelling melodrama. It's hokey and over the top at times, with its quirky one-liners and swelling music score - but there are some strong old-fashioned performances and an engrossing story and characters. Unfortunately, it does loose steam in the last act which makes it drag on a bit too long. Entertaining, but not quite memorable enough to be a classic.

A lively, highly watchable melodrama of the period with the lovely Joan Fontaine manipulating her way into a wealthy marriage while still sleeping around with bad boy Robert Ryan. Fonatine makes an excellent femme fatale in this unusual combination of women's picture and film noir.

The title gives expectations of a gritty noir, and while it turns out to be more of a light drama, it is still a well-made and acted film.
