Martin Scorsese's After Hours is yet another awesome film. Its a huge rush of a black comedy that hits you in the sweet spot. It will have you on your feet when problem after problem occurs and then connects to each other in a crazy diamond effect way. Everything about this movie is done right and it has one of the most twisted plots i've ever seen.

There is nothing Scorsese can't do. He does gangster, boxing, drama, comedy, and even friggan musicals. But this has to be his best comedy (I've seen).

Griffin Dunn with his acting manages to keep anxiety all the time, without making it overhelming. A movie that you want to see when you think that it's not possible that everything always happens to you!

First saw this film as a VHS(!) rental around the time I graduated high school, possibly at an all-night New Year's Event party. It's so off-kilter and darkly comic. Have always liked the story of an average guy's tale of one bizarre evening in Soho.

It might be the strangest movie in Scorsese's oeuvre, but it is most certainly a gem and an overlooked classic.

Not bad...Not Great. This is another 80's movie that I never saw until now. It's funny at times and I guess has a small mystery going. Griffin Dunne really rocked the UniBrow back in the day. Maybe it was left over from American Werewolf in London. :)

I hadn' t ever watched it. It became one of Scorsese's best for me!! The unluckiest man in cinema history takes place here!

I saw this on TV when cable was new and HBO required a special brown adapter. It's brilliant! I now live in NY and I think it's because of this movie. The dialog with the doorman at the punk club is from Kafka's The Trial.

One of the most peculiar movies I've ever seen. Started to feel like Paul Hackett myself as the time ticked off the clock. I can't really explain this movie, so see it yourself and embrace the weirdness.

This is almost forgettable as a Scorcese film for any number of reasons, as it's not a mob flick and doesn't star or co-star DeNiro or Keitel. It centers around a guy who runs out on his "date" and finds himself running into all kinds of problems just trying to get home. Every roadblock he runs into is somehow tied to somebody he met earlier or something he experienced earlier in the film. It's almost Lynchian in it's portrayal of nightlife and a man about to lose his mind, but it's tight-knit enough to be a P.T. Anderson movie as well. Griffin Dunne is so good in this, that's it's hard to believe he didn't amount to much else except Quiz Show and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Pretty enjoyable.

Striking more of a resemblance to something from the mind of David Lynch comes this surreal journey through one night in the life of New Yorker Paul Hackett (Dunne), who after a brief coffee shop encounter with an attractive young woman (Arquette) takes up the offer of a late night invite to her Soho apartment. What follows is a series of bizarre events and oddball run-in's that conspire to lead Paul through possibly the worst night of his life. What's clear is that director Martin Scorsese is having a tremendous amount of fun, almost as if the shackles are off and he's allowing himself to enjoy the process of creating something experimental. The rain swept, neon lit, grimy streets of night time New York are lovingly captured as our protagonist unwittingly stumbles from disaster to disaster in a way that could only happen in your worst nightmares. Like being in a dream state, the film offers the possibility of any occurrence taking place at any given moment and thanks to an increasingly frantic display from Griffin Dunne, a sense of justifiable paranoia grows with every new unfolding. Paul's initial aim of casual sex gradually becomes a desperate bid to escape the weird and not so wonderful people who inadvertently conspire to make him a prisoner for the night. Towards the end, things do tire a little but overall, After Hours plays like a crazy Scorsese trip to the Twilight Zone fully intent on having a great time. 3.5/5
