Movie Info

This drama focuses on life at the Peking Opera School and is a loose biography of Hong Kong film stars Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao. Sammo Hung portrays Master Yu, the academy's brutal schoolmaster, who takes the youths through the rigorous acrobatic training. The film offers an introspective view of Master Yu, as a man who must face the fact that the institution to which he has devoted his life is fading with the passage of time. Although many of the film collaborations of Hung, Chan, and Baio have hinted at their youth together, this film attempts to depict the harsh reality. Nevertheless, Chan has criticized the film, stating that his longtime friend Hung's portrayal was actually too sympathetic an interpretation of Master Yu. ~ Jonathan E. Laxamana, Rovi

Audience Reviews for Qi xiao fu (Painted Faces)

A biographical film of the students in the Baijing opera school who were called "Seven Little Happiness" and their teacher. These seven kids later all become famous action stars and action choreographer including Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Biao Yuen, etc. Characters are almost all real persons, and Summo Hung himself plays the teacher. Even though it is little bit too much beautified, it still has the power that a complete fiction cannot have. Directed/written by Alex Law and produced/co-written by Mabel Cheung. This duo always does good jobs, and their films are really special and unique among all HongKongese films. Summo Hung should be a dangerous choice for the role (because of his strong image as an action star), but probably there is no one who can play this role as effusively as him. It's good to see mature and beautifully aged Pei-Pei Cheng. Law and Cheung are always good at using a symbol as the core of the storytelling - like the turtle in this film.
