This overlooked, subversive movie has a strong feminist message and an even stronger Stanwyck performance.

A so-so noir melodrama, that can't overcome its limited script.

proto-feminist noir with a fantastic stanwyck performance. an ambitious reporter falls for a cop and moves to the suburbs, which soon become her worst nightmare as she sublimates her ambition to further her husband's career. cuz that's what good 50s wives do, right? clever script lacerates the american dream

I really liked this movie, Stanwyck was the perfect choice. The only problem is that you can see where the movie is heading pretty quick.

Barbara wraps this one up with gusto. Hayden is his usual lump of inertia but Missy pushes him right out of her way to hit us full boar with her visceral intensity. There are a few performers who have brief moments but once Barbara takes center stage they don't stand a chance.

Considering the cast, Crime of Passion should've been so much better. A melodramatic attempt at film noir during its death throes Stanwyck plays a driven career woman turned housewife who can't take the mediocrity and boredom of suburban life. For the most part her talent is wasted but the more tragic waste of talent comes from Sterling Hayden as her dopey and unambitious detective husband. There were a few great scenes, but beyond Hayden kicking Royal Dano's ass there's really not a hell of a lot to write home about here.
