Movie Info

Cool Runnings fictionalizes the true story of a bobsledding team from Jamaica making it to the Olympics. The tale begins when Derice Bannock (Leon), realizing that due to an accident his chances of qualifying for Jamaica's 1988 Olympic track team are dashed, scrounges around looking for another sport for the competition. Since ex-United States gold medal bobsledding winner Irv Blitzer (John Candy) now lives in Jamaica, Derice chooses bobsledding, convincing Irv to coach the team. Derice then forms his team. He gets his friend Sanka Cofie (Doug E. Doug) to join up and recruits Junior Bevil (Rawle D. Lewis), a young man who lacks self-confidence, and Yul Brenner (Malik Yoba), a disagreeable and bitter malcontent. After setbacks and near disasters, the group jells as team members and they head off to the Olympics to compete for an Olympic spot.

When I first saw this movie I was young and I thought it was ordinary story about underdogs beating all odds. Then I found out that this movie was based on the true story and I was shocked. Can you imagine that Jamaica, the country that last time saw snow during prehistory, sent bobsled tema on Winter Olympics?! With good chemistry between Leon, Doug, Rawle, Yoba and Candy, funny moments and brilliant one liners this movie, like Sanka, won't die any time soon.

From Walt Disney comes the inspirational true story Cool Runnings, about a group of underdogs that took the world by surprise. The story follows a group of Jamaican athletes who dream of Olympic gold and decide to form the first Jamaican bobsled team in order to achieve it. John Candy leads the cast, and gives a great performance as a former Olympian who becomes their coach and must turn a group of misfits into a team. The comedy works well and the story has a lot of heart. Even though it's a bit of a familiar underdog story, Cool Runnings is a terrific family film that's fun and has an uplifting message about sportsmanship.
