Very good story. Dietrich is perfect and Marshall plays his usual 'nice guy'. Douglas, who's usually suave in his 30's and 40's roles, comes off as a bit of a cad. Not sure which way it's gonna go until the end.

The Lubitsch touch is omnipresent in this relatively unknown but extraordinary romantic comedy...A Double Dry Spell --One wishes that modern romantic comedies had only maintained even a fraction of the wit and incisiveness that Lubitsch established as a norm in the 30s...The sophistication of the film is unusual for its time!!

In comparison to other Lubitsch films (Trouble in Paradise, Ninotchka, The Shop Around the Corner, To Be Or Not To Be), his fabled "touch" is not quite so light or deft here. The set-up seems rife with comic possibilities (mysterious Marlene meets romantic Melvyn Douglas at a Russian émigré's salon and sparks fly) and even once all is revealed (she is married to diplomat Herbert Marshall, who is always busy but truly loves her), there is still enough electric potential for sophisticated comedy magic to happen. But it doesn't. Yet critic Andrew Sarris cites Pirandello and argues that the film is really a treatise on the necessity of keeping up appearances and might be one of Lubitsch's masterpieces. Go figure.

A neglected wife of a British diplomat (played by Marlene Dietrich) visits London has a love affair with an American, who quickly falls in love with her. As gradually throughout the film the husband finds out about the wife's adultery from the American himself, he is given a chance to accept it as a blessing in disguise, to forgive and forget, take the hint to change the way he treats his wife, or break the relationship completely. Interesting plot and a captivating way, in which it unfolds; Marlene Dietrich is particularly in place in this role; but the love matters are handled in a very old-fashioned way, making the film obsolete.

A radiant Dietrich must choose between her long-time husband with whom marriage has cooled, and the prospect of a fresh start with a new man. Very much about the romance necessary for a marriage to survive, and better for it.

Quite different from Lubitsch's feel good movies... Starts off as a cheesy romantic flic but soon gets a rather amusing twist...

[it.wikipedia.org]

Not the kind of screwball comedy you expect from Lubitsch, but since I'm not too fond of what I've seen, that was fine with me. There's a few gags, and good ones, but for the most part it's closer to a romantic drama. Think Brief Encounter with a lighter touch. Marlene Dietrich is growing on me, a lot. Her performance is the most interesting aspect of this movie, which is otherwise somewhat uneventful and predictable, without the melancholic elegance of Lean's film. Loved the ending, though.
