Movie Info

This early Luchno Visconti drama stars Anna Magnani as an overbearing stage mother. Magnani's daughter (Tina Apicella) has zero talent, but Magnani raises such a ruckus at the studio after the girl's abortive screen test that the producers eventually find work for the girl. By this point, Magnani has renounced show business and, with daughter in tow, returns to her patient husband, who has been waiting for his wife to get her dreams of vicarious stardom out of her system. Based on a story by famed Italian scenarist (and frequent Fellini collaborator) Cesar Zavattini, Bellissima seems too trivial a story to be given the tender loving care provided by Visconti. Originally released at 130 minutes, the film was honed down to 90 minutes for American consumption.

  • Perhaps the most unjustly neglected of Luchino Visconti's early films is this hilarious 1951 comedy.

  • It lacks the emotional validity needed for the denouement.

  • ... this is about ruthless competition to break into show business with Anna Magnani as the working-class woman turned aggressive stage mother ...

  • A great introduction to the work of Anna Magnani and Italian neorealist director Luchino Visconti. The dialogue overlaps and everyone speaks quickly, so in all honesty it's a challenge to watch in Italian with English subtitles. But it's also rewarding.

  • In addition to being a beautifully told story, Bellissima is the first honest self-portrait of the cinema.

Anna Magnani is a true Italian delight, so charismatic and funny, and she makes it real difficult for us not to sympathize with her character for trying so hard to enroll her little daughter in a film part competition, in this amusing and touching story that has its heart in the right place.
