It literally shreds the source material in favour of a Van Damme-centric war movie, but I can't bring myself to hate it... mostly for Bison's cheese-tastic lines...

As for Jean-Claude, it's a tough stretch for him to play a figurine from an arcade game but, why, he almost manages to be convincing.

With Van Damme giving one of his most wooden performances, and de Souza failing to capitalize on his graceful fight moves, Street Fighter adds up to the worst of a bad crop of Christmas movies, a picture only an arcade junkie could cheer.

While de Souza's arrested development makes him a likely suspect to adapt a video game for movies, the result (like The Super Mario Brothers movie before it) is an empty exercise in hyper-stimulation. Or, to put it bluntly, a complete waste of time.

De Souza's wit, which gave his earlier action scripts a tart edge, has failed him here. He pitches this entire movie at the sub-literate set that, with glassy eyes, unthinkingly pumps quarter after quarter into video games.

This is [Steven E. de Souza's] directorial debut, and while it shows promise, it is uneven. The film is way too choppy, and as a result we never get a chance to know the characters (except Bison).

It's too bad that the late Raul Julia had to finish his career with this dreck.

Street Fighter overdoses quickly. Though 95 minutes long, it feels tired after one hour. And this is true despite second and third tiers of characters who have their own agendas.
April 25, 2019
One of the best things that can be said about Street Fighter is that it's not nearly as bad as it could've been.
April 24, 2019
The film is based on the popular video game and plays as a pathetically incoherent attempt to accommodate all the characters kids want to see come to life on the big screen.
April 24, 2019
There's very little to get excited about in this laughably bad action adventure.

It assaults the ears and the intellect.

Even at eleven years old I couldn't understand why this was so bad while the games were so incredible.
May 9, 2009
...the film has been infused with a myriad of shamelessly over-the-top elements that inevitably become quite tough to take.
March 2, 2009
Campy video game-derived action-fest.
February 12, 2009
The story of STREET FIGHTER is a mere trifle, but who cares? The real problem is that...the visceral impact is practically nil.
November 2, 2008
In its noisy, pointless way, Street Fighter does come close to the frenetic meandering of a video game scenario -- which is precisely the problem.
July 3, 2008
Far less captivating than the videogame that inspired it.
May 27, 2007
well, video game movies all do suck
June 24, 2006
Julia (in his final role) hams it up shamelessly as the camp commandant, but not even his suave presence and throwaway quips can save this noisy, brainless mess.
