It does feel like it is missing a few crucial scenes but overall this a very good adaptation of the book with some excellent performances.

There are some movies where I can see, even though it's very much not a movie for me, it's still a good movie. This seems like one of those. All the actors do a fine enough job, it's very much an abridged take on the story but they manage to work in what they need to and tell the story as seamlessly as possible, and there is a great beauty to the sets and charm to the direction. Also I must say, there is a charm to story where it's just the lives of some characters. Yes there is commentary on the role of women and women's rights and all that (commentary that, I'm sure, was much more provocative at the time the novel came out but still doesn't hurt for people to hear again), and there is the looming threat of a fever and death, but for the most part it's just these girls with their hopes and dreams and eventually their loves. The movie never presents itself as anything bigger than what it is. It tells a small, charming story, and that's all it wants to tell. Now that being said, this really wasn't a movie made for me. And I say me personally. It's very much about young women growing up and the dynamics of sisterhood. That's not something I can relate to, and there wasn't anything to grab me in the movie. Not to say I have to relate to a movie for it to interest me, but for a story like this told in this particular way I just couldn't get into it. It's just a life of these sisters. They struggle, sure, but the conflicts never interested me, and as such I was frankly pretty bored for most of the movie. That said, I don't want this movie to be anything other than what it is. It's what it's supposed to be for its audience, and that's entirely fine. It's just not meant for me. I have to rate it for myself. Even the rating I'm giving it I give a slight bump just knowing that, it's not for me, but it's still solid. So if this is your thing, go get it.

Let's skip over the Liz Taylor version from the 40s and state that this treatment of the tale is a good following of the tradition. Perhaps not as charming as the one in the 30s, it nonetheless features some good acting particularly by Gabriel Byrne as the old guy who ends up with one of the young 'uns.

The literary classic Little Women is adapted again for a modern audience in this wonderful coming of age film. The story follows the March sisters as they struggle to cope with the absence of their father and grow up during the Civil War. The cast is excellent, and includes Winona Ryder, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, and Susan Sarandon; who all deliver great performances. The costumes and set designs are also exceptionally well done. Yet, the film does have problems providing enough character development. Though it has some issues, this is an enchanting and compelling cinematic adaptation of Little Women.
