Following the novel with unhurried fidelity, the film is as faithful to Austen as Anne Elliot is to the man of her dreams.

As gloriously romantic as it is giddily hilarious, Persuasion gives you a ruefully knowing smile as it sides with the wise heart. You leave the theater feeling better about everything.

Much of the movie's emotional work has to be done by...faces and eyes, while other people speak of other things, and to see that happening is frustrating, because it happens so slowly, and romantic, because it happens at all.

Persuasion is Jane without pain, E-Z Austen. It's a delight.

Austen was always fun to read, and known for her candid insight into human affairs, but somehow Michell and Dear seem to have left these basic ingredients out.
