This movie was so stupid and boring. Plot was nonsense and confusing. Stopped watching after 45 mins. There was so many good actors but it didn't help the Movie.

Having watched documentary films like Gasland and Before the flood I learned a lot about the environment and climate change. Even back then it was a prominent issue and so this film chain reaction was certainly timely. However the execution in this story ended up falling flat, very flat.
Eddie Kasalivich, lily Sinclair and paul Shannon are members of an energy team from the university of Chicago. They have all completed work on a major energy project and they celebrate. On the night of the celebration eddie and lily leave but then eddie ends up going back to the plant and upon his return back he witnesses something he wish he hadn't, a murder and the explosion of the plant he worked at. Eddie along with lily are both framed and on the run from the police as they try and clear their name.
This is definitely a film that actors wanting to learn more about a subject would be happy to be apart of. However it followed just about the same plot idea as the fugitive so there wasn't much room for differentiation. It was an overall weak story and a poorly made film. This needed some rewrites, it could have actually been decent if that had happened.
the effects in this film are absolutely god awful! its so easy to figure out the green screen, the fan, and the machines for sliding. it is so bad! The pacing is pretty bad it feels rushed.
Keanu Reeves actually not bad in here. he gave a decent performance. This was not a bad start for Rachel weisz but her character was badly written with no real substance. Same for morgan freeman. there was nothing really there with his role other than him smoking a cigar. This just seemed like any easy paycheck for Freeman, nothing he could sink his teeth into.
the action scenes were one of the few redeeming qualities of this film. Lastly the music was really weird at times and didn't flow right in the film.
Overall this is a 2 star flick that recommend to nobody

A low budget action film with no style or grace. A waste of a talented cast.

The film was way ahead of its time. In my view, the film is heavily misunderstood & that is why some of the reviews are negative. The premise of the film is that Big Business runs the US, & they will always try to keep alternative energy off of the market for obvious reasons. In this film, the US government presumably the NSA/CIA establishment had fears the whole economy would collapse if this "free fission energy" ever hit the market & the US would plunge into chaos even anarchy. The reason we now fight wars is for oil. The film very adequately describes the how the military-industrial complex, Big Business, & the NSA/CIA run everything, & their real power comes from the coalescing of the 3. I could really appreciate the film, due to the fact that I published a political conspiracy thriller "The Shadow Faction" that describes some of the same issues in re to alternative energy & its enemies & Globalization. A must see for the types who are interested in the controversies surrounding those who are against getting the US & the world off of oil. It's a pro-alternative energy movie.

This isnt a bad movie. Its not great, but its enjoyable. Brings up an interesting point, with so much of the world economy/infrastructure revolving around energy, how do you introduce a perfect energy source into that without collapsing everything?

Nothing special, but at the same time quite well put together all in all. While Morgan Freeman puts in a good performance, Reeves is wooden as ever, and Weisz's character is passive and almost useless. Chain Reaction is not a waste of time, but it is certainly not memorable.

Film d'action avec un Keanu Reeves au top de sa carriere. Le scenar ne casse pas trop pattes mais ca reste un bon petit thriller des annees 90.

Read the critics is not a good idea before rate the movie myself , The 2 explosions in this movie will be the highlights ! Not the best role of Keanu , i smiled a bit about the way he runs ...maybe it looks strange by waring a wintercoat ? SOMVIDEO , stuck in my Videorecorder damned !!!

Watchable but forgettable Fugitive-clone, Chain Reaction's lack of originality dampens its enjoyability. It's not a bad film in individual moments, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If only they went somewhere original with it...

I remember seeing the trailer for this film way back in 96 at the cinema. It looked really quite cool and exciting, Reeves was flying high at the time and it boasted some snazzy CGI, talk about deceptive!

The whole film seemed to be centred around one sequence. That sequence being the huge explosion that occurs near the start and wipes out a vast area of Chicago, nuclear in appearance. Now this was back in the days when CGI was still a newish weapon and big flashy destructive sequences like this were looked upon as impressive and breaking the barrier.

Looking back it is a nice effect but of course its dated and the cracks are showing, but I'm not gonna moan about that. The problem is the rest of the film is really quite dull, visuals are dull, action is dull and the acting is even dull despite a very good cast line up. Reeves is his usual monotone self, Weisz is a complete drip and Freeman now looks pretty cliched in his natty Malcolm X looking 90's suit and hat.

It really does feel like they wanted to show off their CGI destruction sequence so they made an entire film around that one moment. A completely by the numbers action thriller (if you can call it that) that covers every aspect you'd expect from the fugitive chase movie book. Bland boring so very very predictable and the films title is one of those totally meaningless but cool sounding types that looks even cooler with a striking font.

Decent movie. Ok special effects, decent story, so-so performances from its cast.

Amusing and cool action sequences (especially a chase scene on ice) but it does little to reinvigorate the classic cat-and-mouse sub genre..

After a company comes up with a way to harness energy from water, an unknown assailant destroys the factory and murders some of the chief scientists. To make matters worse the lead characters played by Reeves and Weisz are then framed for the whole incident. This movie was quite awful and featured nothing but redundant chases and wash board characters. The only interesting quote is when Freeman describes that the world is built on petroleum. If a source that compete with that came on the market and was given for free, the economics of the world could collapse due to stocks crashing and jobs lost. That was the only good point this film had.
