Movie Info

The indomitable Madeline and her 11 friends live at a school run by Miss Clavel in an old house in Paris. The smallest of all the girls, Madeline is also the most adventurous. She loses her appendix but gains an awesome scar, falls into the Seine only to be rescued by a dog whom the girls later adopt and name Genevieve, and matches wits with Pepito, the devilish son of the Spanish Ambassador who moves in next door.

This pleasant but pedestrian live-action film has one great thing going for it in the shape of Hatty Jones, a tiny Brit with currant-bun eyes full of forthcoming transgression.

A disarming, charming fable so artfully crafted that adults will fall under its spell.

...Adequately simple for children, though perhaps a bit pedestrian for adults.

In Madeline's final adventure, she uses her spunk and creativity in the service of compassion.

No horribly arch double entendres to draw in audiences who can't spend two hours in a theater without having their libido massaged.

Audience Reviews for Madeline

A great adaptation of the children's series. The actors do a fine job, the story is good, and it's an entertaining movie.

½

"Madeline", the movie, is based on the children's books by Ludwig Bemelman featuring the spirited redheaded heroine, as the titular character who is the youngest of twelve girls living at a school which is about to be closed by Lord Cucuface (known in the movie as Lord Covington) after his wife dies. Madeline is as cute as a button and sometimes mischievous. Miss Clavel as the nun is a wonderful supporting character who is always trying to keep Madeline out of trouble. Pepito called "the Bad Hat" by the girls due to his bratty nature is the Spanish ambassador's son who lives next door to the girls. An endearing family film that is enjoyable to watch. The kids will love it.
