Although it's virtually impossible to make a bad movie based on a play as strong as Hamlet, Almereyda almost succeeds.

So poorly produced and directed that there would be serious doubt that the cast speaks English if it were not made up of such well- known and accomplished actors.

2000 version of Hamlet is just dreadful.

Ultimately, I don't think that Michael Almereyda's modern-day adaptation of Hamlet really works, but it's a lot of fun along the way.

Hamlet is supposed to be melancholy, but Hawke plays him as a disturbed loner who is more likely to infect the world's computers with an e-mail virus than avenge his father's murder.

Hamlet is a drama that should be larger than life. This version plays like a Fox network soap opera.

Jitteringly paced and awkwardly edited with a brace of vapid performances. Only Sam Shephard gives a performance worthy of the material.

Never have I seen a more lifeless presentation of a Shakespeare play.

Shakespeare gets buried in a barrage of faxes, videos, jumpcuts, and product placements.

Too intent on its own modernization trickeries for its own good.

But the joke only goes so far, and even at a relatively svelte 112 minutes Hamlet comes apart in its final third.

In the end this noble experiment fails, not for its adventure but for its ultimate lack thereof.

This is one Hamlet that was not meant to be.

The acting is sketchy.

Miramax shouldn't be encouraged to do more along these lines by watching it anywhere but at home. Double feature with Strange Brew & see if anything looks familiar.

What makes Hamlet a masterful play rather than a Jacobean revenge potboiler is the complexity of its central character ... Hawke is simply a sullen adolescent, never smiling.

A flat and uninteresting adaptation of Hamlet.

Decent enough for a film whose dialogue was mostly Greek to me, this movie scores points on style and acting, but ultimately runs too long, features one too many monologues and just completely lost me in the end.

Visually flat.
