It's well acted, nuanced, and surprisingly effective. A definite must-see thriller.

It works best whenever Goodman swaggers into frame, a slack-jawed psycho with a cuddly side.

10 Cloverfield Lane might not be a true sequel to Cloverfield, but that doesn't make it any less magnificent, watching it a spellbinding treat I simply did not want to see come to an end.

Set in the same universe as the 2008 monster-focused blockbuster, 10 Cloverfield Lane focuses tightly on a trio of survivors, with solid fear and tension.

Both Winstead and Gallagher Jr. are great as the young bomb shelter roomies, but it's Goodman's film. He's a Stephen King-style character -- affable and menacing, with both a cheery bonhomie and a hair-trigger temper.

John Goodman brings his A-game to the part of the tightrope-walking Howard who is at times kind and gentle and at others unhinged and cuckoo. Mary Elizabeth Winstead matches him note for note.

Jul 08, 2018This is a nice follow up the original, the fact that it is a story within a story is a stand out part. John Goodman is literally crazy good in his part, stand out portrayal. I also liked the cinematography, it was cool to see such a small place shot so many different ways.Super Reviewer

Apr 02, 2017An affective measured mysterious thriller in which a young woman is abducted and told tby her captor/rescuer that the world has ended due to Chemical warfare, nuclear explosion, or even an alien invasion. Joining her in this predicament is a simple minded handyman who fought his way into this bunker after witnessing The very onset of the cataclysm himself. Together they trying to side whether they are better or worse off locked up with a peculiar ex Navy conspiracy theorist. The movie makes good use of the cramped quarters and three person cast, making The audience wonder what has really happened. I did have a big problem with the use of Howard's daughter Megan was used as a device for suspicion, they tried to play her feet on both sides of the fence but when the final act arrives she is quickly swept under the rug in the hope that she has been forgotten, which didn't sit well at all with me. Otherwise I enjoyed the twists and turns and feeling of ambiguity.Doctor S Super Reviewer

Mar 20, 2017A Cloverfield sequel?! Unfortunately, this is not the case with 10 Cloverfield Lane, a spiritual successor to the found footage horror sci-fi film Cloverfield released back in 2008. Aside from its overall tone and general creepiness, the two movies do not share anything in common. But no matter, because this J.J. Abrams-produced film more than lives up to the similarly named film that he also produced several years ago. 10 Cloverfield Lane tells the story of a young woman named Michelle, portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who gets into a car accident after having a fight with her fiancée in New Orleans. When she awakes, she finds herself trapped in a doomsday shelter built by Howard, played by John Goodman, who tells her the world above is unsafe due to a chemical or nuclear attack on the surface. After a lot of anxiety and an escape attempt, she finally settles down in the bunker with Howard and a local handyman Emmett, portrayed by John Gallagher Jr. I can't delve too deeply into the plot without giving away the one or two major spoilers that the film contains. But, I CAN tell you that the way the film handles the revelation of those secrets is done very well, and the plot is a very interesting and engaging thrill ride. The character of Howard provides an incredible amount of tension and anxiety throughout the events of 10 Cloverfield Lane, making for a tightly wound thriller film. John Goodman does a fantastic job portraying the questionably insane doomsday prepper: he is unpredictable, menacing (largely due to his size), and interesting, and more layers are added to his personality as Michelle and Emmett find out more about his past during the film's events. Mary Elizabeth Winstead also does a great job playing Michelle: her performance is convincing and captivating, and her reactions to some of the surprises in the bunker generally translate over to the audience. The combination of Goodman, Winstead, and the claustrophobic environment introduced by the bunker provide most of the film's tension, relief to which is provided by Gallagher's performance, which is also great. Honestly, there's not much more to discuss about 10 Cloverfield Lane. The acting is great, the story is great, it stands out as an exceptional thriller, and the only real issues it experiences arise from the slow pacing that exists in between the more intense scenes. It's a film I would definitely watch again, and it gets 4 stars.Paul F Super Reviewer

Aug 01, 2016I loved Cloverfield and as a result was looking forward to this. Always a danger as my high expectations are rarely realised these days. 10 Cloverfield Lane met these throughout until the very dodgy ending but this did not detract from my overall enjoyment. In Cloverfield the earth is invaded by space monsters and this film is set against the backdrop of this. In the midst of it all "kicking off" Michelle (Mary Winstead) is involved in a car accident and wakes up in a room where she believes she is being held against her will (maybe the handcuffs are a valid reason for this). Howard (John Goodman) explains to her that this is not the case so who are you gonna believe?Justin F Super Reviewer
