A pretty lame premise.

Someone Like You could probably be charitably characterized as 'cute,' but there's such a lack of direction and energy that it could also be described as 'sleep inducing.'

Someone Like You is as bland as its title.

Has a sour feel, like the inside of a refrigerator playing host to a half-gallon of milk two weeks past its expiration date.

The filmmakers seem to be feeling their way toward a contemporary slant on romance but wind up taking refuge in old-fashioned cliches and trite plot twists.

For a long time, it's unclear which couple we're supposed to be rooting for: Judd and Kinnear, or Judd and Jackman.

It's neither clever nor that funny, the starry cast is underused, and the potential for a much wittier script never fulfilled.

Trading the much better title of its book source "Animal Husbandry" for a song title "Someone Like You" sums up the unoriginality at work in this film.

Gentle and cute, chatty and smart, the film at least holds our interest, mostly due to the sheer charm of its cast.

Desde o início da história fica óbvio, para o espectador, quem são as duas pessoas que dividirão o inevitável beijo final - e não há surpresa alguma neste aspecto. Infelizmente, o roteiro não se preocupa em explicar porque isso acontece.

A particularly shallow dissection of single-woman blues.
March 29, 2001
It seemed over-slick, artificial, unpleasantly self-congratulatory -- a pseudo-Nora Ephron yarn set in the SoHo-Greenwich Village area. More damagingly, it's not very funny.

Forgettable affair.

Stars Ashley Judd, Greg Kinnear, Hugh Jackman and director Tony Goldwyn are probably all hoping that with a title so blandly nondescriptive, no one will see it, and promising careers will be left unblemished.

Elizabeth Chandler's script has, by my count, exactly one sort-of-funny line and not a single scene whose comic possibilities are successfully exploited.

All over the place, and seems to have been made by embittered married people.

A romantic comedy with insights into sex and relationships that are old and obvious.

A little lifeless.
March 29, 2001
A pleasant if unexciting update of a '50s career-girl melodrama, substituting an experienced, disillusioned heroine for the virginal innocents of time past.
