Movie Info

A rare and precious treasure for film buffs, The Life and Death of King Richard III is considered the oldest complete American feature film in existence. Released in 1912, it is an expensive, highly detailed version of Shakespeare's convoluted drama. The film was considered lost until a remarkably preserved, complete copy was discovered in an Oregon basement in 1996. The film stars popular Shakespearean actor Frederick Warde as Richard III and is greatly simplified from the Bard's original work. It was filmed in studios on City Island, New York and features lavish sets, numerous extras, and even a few battle scenes. A few segments were tinted reddish brown or green.
