Ten years from now, it will be the 1968 version that people are still renting.

One more disappointment in a summer of lackluster 'event pictures.'

... not a "remake" so much as a "revisal," a new take on old material. The problem is, no one connected with the film seems to have any idea just what that "take" is.

Overall, Burton delivers a competently staged affair that somehow seems safe and conventional.

The movie fails to rise to the high emotional and imaginative standards Burton has set for himself in such films as Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and the first two Batman movies.

despite some wonderful moments, this Planet of the Apes isn't going to make anyone forget Charlton Heston sinking to his knees in the surf.

It doesn't even seem like Burton showed up to direct this turkey.

Despite its flashes of wizardry, Planet of the Apes doesn't serve his restless, wild imagination.

Like Burton's Sleepy Hollow, another grim triumph of set design over story.

Planet of the Apes has talking monkees, yes, but it doesn't seem to have figured out a damn thing about human behavior, primate behavior or, most importantly, even what it wants to say.

...if 20th Century Fox had set the proverbial 100 chimps in front of typewriters they would have gotten a better result than this adaptation of the Pierre Boulle novel...

Without the faintest hint of director Tim Burton's uniquely uncanny style, Planet of the Apes version 2.0 feels like nothing more than a generic (albeit overblown) sci-fi summer movie -- and a forgettably mediocre one at that.

The fruits of Burton's imagination are almost always worth seeing on the big screen, but don't go expecting anything intelligent.
