Movie Info

Arpad Sopsits directs this harrowing autobiographical tale about the filmmaker's childhood in an oppressive regional orphanage in Hungary during the early '60s. Sopsits' onscreen counterpart is Aron Soproni whose parents recently divorced. Unable to take the strain and the loneliness, Aron's father deposits him at the doorstep of an institution where brutal discipline and harsh conditions are the rule. In this realm of utter repression, Aron forges a couple of close friendships. Though at first lost, Aron's strong, independent streak quickly manifests itself and soon he and his buddies are planning to break out of the institution in spite of the draconian punishments if their plan fails. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival.

Audience Reviews for Abandoned

Dark & gloomy Hungarian film that goes nowhere but deeper into the darkness of abused children in an orphanage. The child actors are very good, and the film was well done...but it left me feeling unsatisfied. I didn't dislike it, but I wish it went another direction, I guess.
