A heady film that boggled my mind. An art house thriller of the metaphysical and the existential, that wrestles with a number of things, not the least of which is the relationship of father and son. I could see shades of the master Tarkovsky, another russian, but The Return is much darker than his work but still affecting.

Quite a twist on the father son holiday in the woods story.

A thought provoking film about an enigmatic father entering the lives of two young brothers after 12 years of absence... the actors performances are very convincing, especially those of the two young brothers, a must see!

Masterfully created with stunning visuals and performances, it's storyline however leaves a bitter sorrowfully end taste that leaves you perplexed and mostly left in the dark like our two main leads.

An unusually simple plot but marking emotional deep visually and allegorically, an unusually stunning drama mixed with tense of psychological-thriller genre coming of ages story and unusual mystery part, beside of what a natural performances by the casts, make "The Return" is almost an unrealized great film you ever watch.

SUCH a bad movie. Only watch if you are a pretentious art house fool who wants to tell other people that you saw "this great Russian movie" even though you know it sucked. Easily in my bottom 5 movies of all time. A terrific kid actor, but other than that there was no entertainment value, no meaning. Always waiting for something to happen, the plot was worthless because there was no context and no point. Anyone who is honest would never review this waste of time positively.

The Return is a dark, eerie film set in the outskirts of Northern Russia. When a father candidly returns to his two sons, after 12 years of absence, one meets him with admiration while the other in spite. What Zvyagintsev does great in his directorial debut is build eeriness with sound, even in scenes where nothing is apparently wrong, something feels off. By the end it's not clear how cruel the apparent gangster father was, never fully revealed, but he doesn't feel as evil as the build-up would suggest he is.

The film has explored a very deep psychological complexity and has done it most elegantly and flawlessly. There are only three human beings for the most part of the film and for a large part they are lost and isolated in wilderness. The transition of two boys from boyhood to manhood is the main theme. Their relationship with their little-known father is very intense, as intense as in an animal level. There is conflict, hatred and also blind obedience. Underneath all the passing emotions there is something deep inside, a feeling of love.
The juvenile actors have superbly represented the fine nuances of emotional conflict and crisis. It could not be any better than that. The behavior of the humans lost in the wild is as mysterious as the mysterious nature itself. There is something inexplicable, something you have to feel but cannot be said in words. The air of mystery will haunt you. You cannot just sit easy and enjoy, it is not a movie of that kind.

It may be a difficult film to watch, but it is certainly much more difficult to forget

Quietly moving. Poignant as it is disturbing.

Not a fun afternoon or saturday evening movie, but worth watching. Still, can someone explain it to me? Does the father love his children? Why is he with them? What does he want from them?

Misterioso, visualmente inventivo, o The Return é um drama intenso de grande impacto emocional. Um puto reguila mas casmurro apreende uma licção da pior forma:

Ivan Dobronravov is so very impressive.

The superb performances build an interesting but somewhat unfulfilling relationship between two boys and their father, and it is entirely too ponderous to be truly affecting for this viewer.

A remarkable visual but slightly empty at the end - powerful and emotional, but somewhat empty.
