Movie Info

For his first filmmaking effort without brother Josh Kornbluth by his side, Jacob Kornbluth followed up the duo's Haiku Tunnel by writing and directing this offbeat drama about a family struggling to cope with unexpected strife and the pitfalls of adolescence. The Best Thief in the World stars Mary-Louise Parker (Boys on the Side, Angels in America) as the family matriarch, a public-school English teacher whose husband has recently suffered a stroke, leaving her the household's lone breadwinner. Meanwhile, her oldest son Izzy is rebelliously acting out in response to the tumult at home and his own growing pains by breaking into apartments and rearranging the furniture. The Best Thief in the World screened in competition at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.

Film Blather

It has a pleasant, affable feel to it. It's a movie that wants you to like it, and is actually worth liking.

The harsh and grating techno score makes the movie as unappealing for the ears as the eyes. The underwritten film features unsympathetic and unbelievable characters.

Audience Reviews for The Best Thief in the World

Well acted but very slow moving at times. The plot is interesting though. Realistic cinematography. I had a hard time warming up to the characters, and for a film of this nature, that is essential.

The story has so much potential, but the writing and acting takes away any credibility to the truth of a seriously troubled youth. This director can take a lesson from Lynne Ramsay in her 1999 film The Ratcatcher. The best thing about this film was the insert of two little boys rapping, wow they were good. film rating - :rotten:
