License to Wed (2007)

Critic Consensus: Featuring one of Robin Williams' most shtick-heavy performances, the broad and formulaic License to Wed wrings little out of its slightly creepy, unappealing premise.

Movie Info

Newly engaged Ben Murphy's fiancée, Sadie Jones, has always dreamed of getting married in a traditional wedding at her family church. The problem is St. Augustine's only has one wedding slot available in the next two years, and its charismatic pastor, Reverend Frank, won't bless Ben and Sadie's union until they pass his patented, foolproof marriage-prep course. Through outrageous classes, outlandish homework assignments and some pious manipulation, Ben and Sadie are about to find out whether they really have what it takes to make it to the altar--and live happily ever after.

It's exactly what it looks like from the commercials -- a one-joke movie, and that one joke isn't even funny to begin with.

Despite its fuzzy, getting-to-know-you message, the movie itself offers zero motivation for any of its protagonists.

Like some weddings, License to Wed is a long sit and a bland buffet.

This assaultively unappealing 'romantic comedy' could well mark the opening salvo in a whole new Hollywood campaign against movie piracy. Anybody who'd steal this dud would stink just from carrying it around.

Audience Reviews for License to Wed

Hilarious... at times. The plot wasn't really that well thought out and you don't believe 'however unrealistic it would of been anyway' that that the vicar would get away with doing all of that stuff. I know it's supposed to be funny, but for me it was just ok. John Krasowski is gorgeous though and I love him as an actor!

Oh dear, should have been called License to BORE!

What could have and should have been a charming little romantic comedy is almost completely ruined by the creepy and reprehensible character played by Robin Williams. It's a shame since Mandy Moore and John Krasinski have nice chemistry to their scenes and play well off each other. A lost opportunity.
