Step Brothers

Critics Consensus

Step Brothers indulges in a cheerfully relentless immaturity that will quickly turn off viewers unamused by Ferrell and Reilly -- and delight those who find their antics hilarious.

  • It isn't even the funniest movie I've seen this year. But it sure made me laugh.

  • The shouty variety of manchild comedy that Ferrell has cribbed from Jerry Lewis divides movie fans intensely. Here's the one we should put in the time capsule.

  • On its own terms, Step Brothers is hilarious. But it's a shame that the filmmakers didn't have more faith in the audience. Why resort to gross-out tactics when your premise is strong enough to allow for a more sophisticated approach?

  • Unremittingly juvenile and irredeemably funny.

  • One thing spoils the mood: for all the joy that Ferrell and Reilly take in brawling or whimpering like two-year-olds, immaturity is still seen as something to be overcome.

  • Between occasional guffaws and more frequent hand-over-mouth, oh-my-God moments, I started to think about where American comedy has come from and where it's going.

With so much that is quite retarded here, this is actually a hilarious Apatowian comedy that works so well thanks to Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, who have a great onscreen chemistry together and can be really charismatic playing two clueless idiots.

Stupidness is only funny for a little bit then it's just stupid. II laughed at a couple of scenes, but this was a mostly unenjoyable movie. I won't watch it again. I watched the unrated extended edition by the way.....

Step Brothers is funny at times and features great rivalry between Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. However this film does falter with jokes that fall flat most of the time and poor timing of jokes.
