Step Brothers

Critics Consensus

Step Brothers indulges in a cheerfully relentless immaturity that will quickly turn off viewers unamused by Ferrell and Reilly -- and delight those who find their antics hilarious.

  • Step Brothers obviously isn't the most complex screenplay ever written, but Ferrell, McKay and Reilly (who all co-wrote the film) manage to milk plenty of comedy out of essentially a one-joke movie.

  • We've been down this path before with Ferrell, and at this point it feels like we're just walking in circles.

    June 6, 2019 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…
  • The film doesn't aspire to much. It's happy to milk laughs from creative swearing, goofy, childish behavior, and a hilarious digression that explains exactly why you should never wake a sleepwalker. It does all of this well.

  • It isn't even the funniest movie I've seen this year. But it sure made me laugh.

  • It's a tad problematic, a mite disturbing and immensely funny.

  • That ranks as a major disappointment, considering the two goofballs portraying the title Step Brothers -- Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly -- are usually good for at least a few laughs.

With so much that is quite retarded here, this is actually a hilarious Apatowian comedy that works so well thanks to Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, who have a great onscreen chemistry together and can be really charismatic playing two clueless idiots.

Stupidness is only funny for a little bit then it's just stupid. II laughed at a couple of scenes, but this was a mostly unenjoyable movie. I won't watch it again. I watched the unrated extended edition by the way.....

Step Brothers is funny at times and features great rivalry between Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. However this film does falter with jokes that fall flat most of the time and poor timing of jokes.
