Movie Info

The tormented spirit of a dead singer haunts the same school where she met her mysterious end, and the only person who can hear her cries of vengeance is her devoted best friend. Park Young-Eon was a promising singer who simply disappeared one night while practicing at school. Though her body was never found, her voice still echoes through the hallways of the school. But only Young-Eon's best friend Kang Sun-min can hear her disembodied calls. Now, as Sun-min discovers the disturbing truth about the death of Young-eon, she realizes that her friend's killer is still stalking the school campus.

"I can't open my eyes... What if I open them and you're not there?"

Ghost Voice (or just The Voice to give it the on-screen title) is the fourth in the Ghost School / Whispering Corridors series of thematically similar films, and for me is the best. Showing us events largely from the ghost's point of view, Voice benefits from having a small cast of main characters and a clear, unmuddled storyline - which given the various twists that happen is a really massive achievement. Unlike the other films in the series, there's less concentration here on the pressures of high school and greater emphasis on relationships, memory and guilt. The lesbian subtext from the previous films is also much more prominent, and there's a brilliant underlying truth here about how we never really know people as much as we think. Writer/Director Equan Choe has a clear vision and effectively builds on atmosphere and feeling rather than pandering to cheap shocks or excessive blood-letting (though there are some gruesome parts), and despite the exposition-heavy climax (which by the way, is totally heartbreaking and doesn't cheapen what has come before), Voice remains a beautiful character-driven film. Props also to the excellent music score and thoughtful, restrained performances from the four lead actresses. This is great stuff.

This is part 4 of the girls school ghost trilogy..after whispering corridors, memento mori, wishing stairs, now this. Well this movie crawls at a tedious pace and plays out more as a mystery. It does have a few tense moments and key points are slowly revealed at first, then all at once toward the end (I think the filmmaker was running out of film so he sped things up a tad). Lesbianism and jealousy between the characters past and present run rampant and plays the key factor to the sudden demise of most key characters. I thought the end (spoiler), where the one ghost losing her voice occupies the physical body of her only friend is effective if not appropriate. A somewhat interesting, if not convoluted perspective of goings on in an all-girls school. Well they are all pretty to look at if you can look past the cat fighting and loving between them. Worth a watch...
