Beyond a Reasonable Doubt

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt

Critics Consensus

Hackneyed and over dramatic, this undercooked courtroom drama suffers from bad dialogue and a twist ending you'll see from a distance.

Movie Info

High profile lawyer, Mark Hunter has an impeccable record putting criminals behind bars and is a shoo-in for governor in the upcoming election. But when ambitious rookie journalist, C.J. Nicholas begins investigating Hunter for tampering with evidence to secure his convictions, the district attorney's perfect record is up for scrutiny. Commencing a risky game of cat-and-mouse with Hunter, C.J. frames himself as a murder suspect to catch the corrupt D.A. in the act. Romantically involved with C.J. but unaware of his assignment, assistant D.A. Ella Crystal becomes caught between her boss's political ambitions and C.J's dangerous exposé. As mounting evidence stacks up against both men, Ella's own life becomes threatened when she discovers incriminating proof that puts the fate of both C.J's innocence and Hunter's reputation in her hands.

Critic Reviews for Beyond a Reasonable Doubt

  • A good rule to follow for wannabe gritty thrillers: Lead actors shouldn't remind you of late-night informercial pitchmen.

  • There's little in this pointless rehash to distract audiences from the pleasure of watching Tamblyn, a fine young actress whose direct, grownup stare belies her baby features.

  • What you won't be able to figure out is why this laughable yarn didn't go straight to DVD.

  • The leads can't lend either spunk or gravitas to what was already a preposterous yarn 50 years ago.

  • There are plenty of reasonable doubts about his mediocre legal thriller remake.

  • I've got no problem with movies that stack up twists like crazy straws. Hyam's script, however, depends on us being dumber than every character in the film-you'd have to reach protozoan levels just to resist wanting to strangle everyone in it.

Brilliant narrative despite the few plot holes. Enjoyable to watch.

Not as bad as I heard it would be. And nobody plays a villain better than Michael Douglas. Gaps? Yes. A little far fetched? Yes. If for nothing else, see this for Michael Douglas.

based on a classic fritz lang film, of the same name, this is a little more entertaining than it should be. it looks quite tv movie of the week, and performances arnt much above that, even michael douglas is homing it in, but it runs along smoothly and certainly being based on a film from trhe 50s you can see some of it in its tone, one interesting note is the music which comes off hitchcock at times and helps it along at times, a remake thats neither brilliant or bad, just oedinary

The film was so so. The pacing was off. It kind of reminded me of films like The Pelican Brief, Sliver, and A Perfect Murder. Even though Amber Tamblyn and Jesse Metcalfe were ok in their roles, other actors in those roles could have done a much better job. Joseph Gordon Levitt and Ellen Page could have played those roles much better. Douglas does his best, given what he has to work with. Orlando Jones steals every scene that he is in.
