Movie Info

Feminist filmmaker Joan Braderman turns her lens on the New York-based female art collective who published the political/art magazine Heresies in the 1970s. Interviews with the second-wave feminists involved with Heresies offer a candid snapshot of what it was like to live and work in an era when women were only begrudgingly accepted as equals to men. By learning such practical skills as electrical wiring and plumbing, Braderman and company were able to transform disheveled Lower Manhattan lofts into habitable meeting places where they would convene to plan the latest issue of their groundbreaking magazine.

If Braderman's voice-over narration drifts into nostalgia for a lost utopia on occasion, the testimony of her interlocutors reminds us that even though consciousness-raising groups are a thing of the past, the spirit of the group is very much alive.

The women interviewed seem thoughtful and searching. They deserve a movie that does more than take them at their word.
