An excellent film. Definitely Taiwanese film, neither Hong Kong nor mainland Chinese films. Very personal and literature-like, and yet very pop. Very close to works by Edward Yang and early Ang Lee whose films Sylvia Chang is actually in. Chang proves that she is not only a great actor but a great writer and director by this film. She should be taken as one of the most creative and important Asian female filmmakers of today. Each episode is well done, and girls of different ages are really well represented by Chang's direction and actresses. Angelica Lee and Kate Yeung are really cute, and Rene Liu is excellent choice for the role. Performance by Sylvia Chang herself is of course fantastic - very daring and sincere. Actors playing male characters are gorgeous too - Tony Leung Ka-Fai, Anthony Wong, and Ricie Ren, who are the top stars of Hong Kong and Taiwan. Personally, I like the episode of "30" because of its happy conclusion, but "20" and "40" are both brilliant too. How each female character meets each other in film is another highlight of the film.
An evocative chick-flick that anecdotally highlights the central decades of a modern asian woman's life. quip: "so, i am an abandoned woman". a bittersweet romcom not to be missed - esp the scene where sylvia gets chased around the apartment by her tennis coach.
