Movie Info

'37' is inspired by the true story of Kitty Genovese murder in Kew Gardens, NY in 1964. The story made national headlines when it was reported that 37 neighbors witnessed the brutal murder and rape of Kitty Genovese and did not intervene. Something known as "The Bystander Effect." A fictional account of what may have happened, '37' peeks into the lives of three disparate families, the lonely neighbor, and the doorman, who may have witnessed that tragic night. We understand their decisions not to act, by understanding their day-to-day struggles.

Critic Reviews for 37

All Critics (9) | Top Critics (4)

In the face of real-life tragedy, "37" only perpetuates a myth.

Oct 6, 2016 | Full Review…

It is a haunting movie, one in its director's total control, full of disturbing ideas and no short amount of magic.

Oct 6, 2016 | Full Review…

As Grasten strains to connect the unhappy lot to the Genovese myth, convincing drama flickers out of reach.

Oct 6, 2016 | Full Review…

Grasten's film succeeds in further muddying the moral backwater dredged up by the Times story, but viewers who don't come forearmed with background knowledge will find it hard to stick with.

Oct 5, 2016 | Full Review…

37 is disturbing for its reported accuracy surrounding the actual death of Genovese, but Grasten doesn't present an effective narrative. It's a slow burn, leading up to a third act that is muffled and lacks power.

Feels less interested in offering any commentary or adding any substance than in propagating the original myth.
