Tykwer's script is structured so that the audience knows more about the characters' connections than they do. As each faces a midlife crisis/turning point, fate sometimes appears to be calling the shots.

It's a funny, fearless, suspenseful sex comedy that, in drawing on science and philosophy and art and death, risks accusations of pretentiousness.

Modern to a fault.

Narratively and stylistically, Tykwer turns the love triangle on its head, crafting an emotionally mature and complex film that's dense with the stuff of life.

Like all Tykwer films, hard to categorize. A blind-sided triangle romance? ... Let's settle on calling it an alarming comedy, part Billy Wilder, part Wim Wenders.

...Tom Tykwer's provocative and ferociously intelligent 3, a movie no Hollywood studio would ever green-light but which is nonetheless one of this year's best films so far.

A sensuous intellectual romp whose strong casting makes it involving, even when sentimentality creeps into the story or ideas present themselves in boldface.

It's the smaller bits of whimsy that stick ... touches of warmth in what's ultimately more a forward-looking fable than a love story.

[Showcases] a restless, ambitious talent who invariably puts an idiosyncratic stamp on his material, no matter how ordinary it is at the core.

A playfully pieced-together, beautifully shot, and secretly ridiculous drama about a triangular relationship among blasé Berliners.

The movie's too sleek and chilly and doesn't exactly call to mind a warm, romantic comedy.

The only legitimate connection that results from sex-driven deception and lack of communication is the marriage of your hand and forehead.

The film is successful in an absorbing sort of way, but underwhelming.

Tykwer can't seem to turn Hanna, Simon and Adam into real people. They feel like pawns in the service of a more cerebral diversion than the game of life.
