The film is successful in an absorbing sort of way, but underwhelming.

For a while, Tykwer gets by on the loveliness of his compositions and his talent for conjuring up unique settings and interesting exchanges.

Rarely gets deep enough under [its characters'] skin to make them seem like more than devices in a socio-political thesis.

The movie's too sleek and chilly and doesn't exactly call to mind a warm, romantic comedy.

Rois has moments of desperate urgency and depth, but Twyker's love of parallels is finally done in by artsy shots of the threesome au naturel against stark white backdrops.

Tykwer's new 3 is that it comes the closest of any of his films in the past 10 years to showing a little energy, a little life. But unfortunately, it's a bit overstuffed, and far too long for its simple theme.

Tykwer is working in anachronisms. What once shocked now feels dully familiar.

The only legitimate connection that results from sex-driven deception and lack of communication is the marriage of your hand and forehead.

Despite its fascinating and humorous moments, one can't help but be frustrated when at times it switches away to spiritual pretentiousness.

Tykwer exhibits a fondness for split screens and other eye candy but no interest in formalities like character and plot development.

You can't shake the feeling that 3 exists primarily to justify a shot of three figures impeccably posed together on a mattress.

"Farewell to a deterministic understanding of biology," Adam suggests at one point. It's harder to shake off a formulaic notion of film.

Tykwer can't seem to turn Hanna, Simon and Adam into real people. They feel like pawns in the service of a more cerebral diversion than the game of life.

Narratively and stylistically, Tykwer turns the love triangle on its head, crafting an emotionally mature and complex film that's dense with the stuff of life.

...Tom Tykwer's provocative and ferociously intelligent 3, a movie no Hollywood studio would ever green-light but which is nonetheless one of this year's best films so far.
