Testosterone laced and overwhelmingly male in its point of view, the film is high on locker room lewd 'n crude, and excruciatingly, well, pre-climactic for those in the demographic most likely to identify with abstention as a masochistic deed.

A large part of the film's appeal stems from watching Pearl Harbor pin-up Josh Hartnett shed his usual grave demeanor in favor of bawdy comedy and an earnest grin.

40 Days and 40 Nights has the gall to presume itself an earnest romantic comedy. It isn't.

An underwhelming DVD package though the film's rock-solid look and sound should appeal to anyone hooked on Hartnett's package.
