Elm Street but without the obvious menace of Freddy Kruegar. This is in fact the french canadian horror film directed by Eric Tessier. The film is a little strange in that it starts out as a horror/torture film about a guy who falls off his bike outside the house of a serial killer who locks him up when he inadvertently see's that he has another man locked up and bleeding in one of the bedrooms. The killer is Beaulieu, a sadistic creature who believes he is randomly killing those who are not righteous and genuinely seems to believe that he is actually doing gods work. He makes a deal with Yannick that if he can beat him at chess then he will let him go. From there it's bizarre, and ultimately features one of the sickest games of chess you will ever see. There are a few minor gripes but for the most part it's solid, Mark Andre Grondin is the highlight and you wouldn't mind betting he's got a decent future ahead of him.

A young man knocks on a door one day in need of help, once inside he discovers a man in need of help, who is being kept by the ocupants, he in turn is kidnapped and locked away, it turns out the man of the house, husband and father to two kids, is capturing people he believes bad and kills them, a true purpose you discover later. but this young man is innocent and certainly not guilty of anything in mans eyes, so he keeps him captive, and after a while its clear what he needs to do, and a interesting film with chess as a theme is formed. a well crafted thriller using its setting and elements well. the film runs great and the 2nd act going places. great central p[erformances and a interesting journey for the captived man. enjoyed

This movie was pretty scary! This guy falls off his bike and finds himself seeking help from this man, only to be held hostage by the insane man named Beaulieu and his family. It has a strange ending, too. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat!

One of the Best Psychological Suspense Films to Come Out of Canada

Imagine if that jovial taxi driver that took you to the airport was doing something odd on his spare time. Everyone has had neighbours who keep to themselves just a little too much and you know there's something going on behind closed doors. Part of the weight that this film carries may be because it is filmed in a home that looks like it could be found in any regular Canadian neighbourhood. As a Quebecer, it was even more disturbing for me because the father reminds me of so man people that I've met before.

The atmospheric horror grows with every minute of the movie and the grande finale is worth the wait!

This French psycho thriller is very bizarre and disturbing. When a college student has a biking accident, he goes to this house for some help. Bad choice, because the house is controlled by an extremely bizarre serial killer, and now the biker is kept in a locked room without any idea what's going on, and seeing a dead body carried out of it. I should say, the viewers have no idea what is going on, and why the mad killer does what he does, except he is a chess player that has never been beaten. The biker is tortured beaten but for some reason, not killed, just kept in a room. It all comes down to about the most bizarre chess game ever played in movie history. Pretty good movie, strange of course, but pretty entertaining.

Who'd have thought torture-porn and chess would work so well together.
Great french canadian horror that's smarter and classier than most horror films of late. Marc-Andre Grondin is great in the demanding lead role and there are some truly shocking moments to keep you glued to the screen.

A truly scary horror movie. The movie was in French so I had subtitles. What makes this scary is how the two main characters plays chess with Dead bodies. A guy shoots a child with a shotgun!!!! Really scary, even the main character who is laying chess with himself and beliving some one is playing chess with him. Freaky!!!

funny how hollywood can barely make a good remake never mind original horror... yet the french (well french-canadian in this case) can make a brilliant film about anything, this gore-shy 110mins thriller, a serial killer looking for apprentice all centred around playing CHESS.. sound dull?? ha!! it is superb!!!! it really is 9/10!!!
