The low-budget movie, set during Russia's 2008 invasion of Georgia, is neither innovative nor profound, but it is kinetic, visceral and sometimes moving.

Would-be serious treatment of war is lethally undermined by director Renny Harlin's ham-fisted, exploitative approach.

This tribute to news journalists manages to pack in a few cliches, but director Renny Harlin has always been good with action, and the action scenes here are scarily effective.

While it's let down by its reliance on action genre clichés, this remains compelling and thought-provoking throughout.
