Movie Info

The magician, Georges Méliès, appears upon the stage with his assistant. Taking a handkerchief from his pocket, he causes an empty jar to suddenly appear under it. He places the empty jar upon the table and seizing his assistant by one arm, begins pumping, so that a stream of water emits from the mouth of the assistant and fills the dish. And that is only the beginning of this magician's tricks.

Audience Reviews for Excelsior! (Prince of Magicians) (The Magician and the Human Pump)

This is available to watch for free on Mubi. I had watched it before and couldn't remember if it was Melies, but took another look after seeing a couple disappointing Melies shorts at a local art school film house. As the opening title frame explains with a little history this was made by Georges Melies. It is another instance of his stage magic act transferred to the screen with trick photography. Mubi, in my experience, does a great job presenting the highest quality in their streaming videos. Here Melies shows a lot more creativity in his magic act. He keeps things moving along much quicker to pack more enjoyment into the two minute run time.
