The film commendably gives us vivid and memorable people whose personal stories strikingly illuminate their peoples' struggles ...
It doesn't even begin to cover the scale and toll of the cataclysm in any of the three countries, not to mention the Arab Spring as a whole.
"We Are the Giant" is the movie equivalent of a flashy historical exhibition in which the only text accompanying the gripping photographic collection consists of captions.
We Are the Giant tries so hard to get viewers to cheer on the recent Arab Spring uprising that it distressingly ignores the individual factors that led Libyans, Syrians, and Bahrainis into the streets in the first place.
You'll walk out of this electrifying documentary about the Arab Spring with your blood boiling.
A frequently inspiring and exciting documentary.
Thrilling reminder that people are ready to die for their ideals in a period of history when corruption and brutality run rampant, starting with the White House.
One of the problems with We Are The Giant is that not all the stories carry equal weight, both in terms of effectiveness and in the sheer amount of time Barker spends on them.
It ironically reveals its intent to suture shut any remote ambivalence regarding its own gung-ho ethos, in effect engaging the same sort of oppressively dogmatic tactics it so outwardly denigrates.
Structurally, the film is a little cumbersome. The footage of Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and other heroes of peaceful protest is a distraction. The three main stories, though, are inspiring and shocking by turns.
The personal, often achingly sad and heroic accounts are intercut with news and handheld footage from the rebellions and a hefty and rather obvious dose of quotes and stills from previous revolutionary leaders.
A heartfelt portrait of courage.
