Critics say Scary Movie overloads on crudity and grossness to get its laughs.

These gags are hardly the height of inspiration, but it could be that people laugh at them because they're not as pathetic as a character having a penis jabbed through his head like an ice pick.
The Wayans brothers just want to make us laugh... And for the first 20 minutes, they do. After that the gag-rate plummets, and it's a long haul to the credits.
The kind of thing that leads to sleepless nights -- from severely bruised rib cages.
There's energy and glee in the movie, as if the Wayans brothers were still little boys, desperately working to out-gross each other. Naughty little boys and girls everywhere, even those who have officially grown up, will appreciate their commitment.
Would it be asking too much if the hit-and-miss jokes could maybe nudge an inch beyond the obvious?
This movie, by any name, would be as entertaining.
Scary Movie might not be a classic, but it's a solid satire of contemporary slasher films that I had a good time with.
I laughed some at Scary Movie, but I came away from it feeling dirty.
This movie will only frighten you with its crudeness.
Ends up being less funny than its primary target, the already-self-satirizing Scream series.
The appeal seems to lie less in laughter than in respect for the filmmakers' irreverence as viewers sit back and think, "I can't believe they showed that!"
Scream was already a smart parody that made fun of horror movie conventions and clichés, so this silly (yet sometimes funny) spoof feels pretty pointless and shoots in every direction to see if it hits (even The Matrix gets thrown in the mix), but it has more misses than hits.
This afternoon, I finally watched this movie through from beginning to end. You know what...I did not laugh once. This movie is just ridiculous. How in the world can such a stupid movie, make so much money at the box office? Are we all without minds in this world?
This movie is a complete ripoff of Scream (which it parodies), and all other of the newer 90's style horror movies. Hollywood must really be hurting for ideas if a movie this terrible could actually be made.
If you want to laugh, watch one of Mel Brooks' parodies, or the Monty Python films, or even The Pink Panther movies. These are true comedies. This is just a sick and twisted, incoherent movie with absolutely nothing funny in it.
Now excuse me while I go and dust off my copy of Beverly Hills Cop, and watch a real entertaining, funny movie. 1/2 star 1-17-01 (Updated)
An obscene parody of horror films that executes with laughter and dark humor. The Wayans Bros. team up to bring their parody-filled skills to the world of horror and suspenseful cinema. And may I say it's so hysterical, that it's scary! 4.5/5
The bad thing in the comercial cinema, is that: filmmakers doesn't want to know if the material is good or he's really express himself with the work that he made, his only concern is the money. Same thing happen in Scary Movie, but it's impossible doesn't laugh with the comedy by Wayans brothers.
