Ranks among one of the most wryly self-aware works of American pop culture entertainment in years.
The filmmakers are less interested in providing a slow buildup to their frights than in splattering the clichés of the form in funny, spirited ways.
In order to subvert any popular form, entertainment first has to work on its own terms. Goddard and Whedon are too busy geeking out to bother with those requirements.
The setup is intriguing but the balance feels off. Goddard and Whedon overplay the winking postmodernism.
One of the best movies of 2012 so far, in any genre.
By the time the ride is over, director Drew Goddard and co-writers Goddard and Joss Whedon will change course three or four times, nodding and winking but never losing momentum.
There is a great breadth of narrative invention at work here, as well as a lot of thoughtfulness about quite a few subjects. Cabin effectively looks at the horror genre without ever even tapping on, much less breaking, the fourth wall.
With a combination of his trademark wit and comedy gore, Whedon has once again reinvigorated a stale genre.
A film that is both cerebral and visceral, both humorous and frightening, both by-the-numbers and completely unexpected and all of this at the same time.
an ingeniously plotted and witty reflex on the horror genre itself, as well as its voyeuristic audience and its cathartic function.
Its frustrations with the genre aren't misdirected, but Cabin is really a treatise on the horror movie of twenty-or-more years ago.
The Cabin in the Woods is a love letter and warning to the genre: evolve or die.
A decent twist to the old creepy cabin in the woods genre. It led to an unusual feel to the film though, it wasn't like watching a slasher film as you know something else is going on behind the scenes. It has a fair bit of dark humour to it as well. The twist does make for a more interesting film, so at least it tried something different.
Super Reviewer
In times of reality shows, this type of meta-film is such a brilliant idea, an incredibly smart and thought-provoking commentary that plays with the conventions of the genre using plenty of humor, sharp irony and intelligence - and the last half-hour is especially amazing.
Very clever
This was quite a pleasant surprise. Loved the characters and the ending.
